While many of their fellow Keuka College classmates traveled home for winter break, participants in the D.R.I.V.E. Program moved their experiential learning 45-minutes away to Cumming Nature Center.  The South Bristol nature center played host to the 26 students who participated in classes, volunteered at the welcome desk, and completed maintenance and small-scale construction projects.

“It was an amazing opportunity for our students to enhance their education through purposeful hands-on experiences while having the great outdoors literally outside their classroom door,” said Director of D.R.I.V.E. John Luppino.  “The students volunteered at the welcome desk, renovated a classroom, built natural wood benches, created videos, performed general maintenance tasks and continued learning valuable skills during a time when Keuka College classes are not in session.”

D.R.I.V.E. is a partnership between the ARC of Yates, Keuka College, and the Penn Yan School District.  26 students are currently enrolled in the program that pairs students with peer mentors, provides unique classes, and integrates individuals on the college campus and in all aspects of college-life.

“This is the first time we’ve ever had a collaboration of this type,” said Cumming Nature Center Director Nathan Hayes.  “It has been a win-win for both of our organizations.  The students have helped to re-string snowshoes, build furniture, and have been a great help directing visitors and guests to our facility.”

Several students have also worked through the month learning video recording and editing skills, resulting in a 30-minute video of their experience.  The videography class is just one of the unique classes that students have the choice to participate in both on campus and during the winter break experiential learning session.

The month of special programming will end on February 5th with a special celebration.  Students will give tours beginning at 11am to local officials, members of Rochester Museum and Science Center, and school officials.  The event will end with the screening of the video created by the videography class.
