Arc of Yates Celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Arc of Yates Celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to create a forum for discussion to “increase public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.”  Since that time the annual campaign has provided a platform to promote social change through a greater understanding about the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.  As a result, communities have become increasingly aware that disabilities need not prevent individuals from realizing their full potential at school, work, home, or in their communities.

Since 1987 the field of developmental disabilities has changed dramatically, but the struggle for access and equality continues.  We pride ourselves in creating an environment of exploration, opportunities and possibilities, and to that end we will continue our deliberate efforts to eliminate the barriers that prevent the individuals we support from achieving their goals.

Through its myriad of programs and services, the Arc of Yates strongly supports and promotes the inclusion of individuals with disabilities as full members of society.  In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, the Agency has reached out to local businesses to enlist individuals in volunteer or work related activities.  If your business is interested in this opportunity, please contact Karissa Hefferon, Administrative Assistant to the President and CEO at or by calling 315-536-7447.
